EDUCATION & OUTREACH

Dramatically increase the number of cancer survivors through education and outreach and provide innovative support strategies for patients and families touched by cancer.

• AMC/UCCC is one of only five NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation who are members of the LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of Excellence Network.

• The AMC Cancer Research Center and UCCC have operated a toll-free Cancer Information and Counseling Line (CICL) for over 25 years, staffed by masters-trained and licensed counselors. This free program, still operated as a program of UCCC, is nationwide and provides information to cancer patients, survivors, family members and the general public.

• Dr. Al Marcus and colleagues conducted the largest study to date evaluating a telephone counseling program for early stage, post-treatment, breast cancer patients. The program reported a 50% reduction in levels of distress and depression. The study has national implications for telephone counseling, particularly in areas where patients have limited geographic and transportation access.

• The Prevention and Control Department continues to be the local and national model for cancer prevention and control with its long-term focus on behavioral and psychosocial research and dissemination of educational resources and counseling to patients, families and communities.
