EDUCATION & OUTREACH
Dramatically increase the number of cancer survivors through education and outreach and provide innovative support strategies for patients and families touched by cancer.
AMC/UCCC is one of only five NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation who are members of the LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of Excellence Network.
The AMC Cancer Research Center and UCCC have operated a toll-free Cancer Information and Counseling Line (CICL) for over 25 years, staffed by masters-trained and licensed counselors. This free program, still operated as a program of UCCC, is nationwide and provides information to cancer patients, survivors, family members and the general public.
Dr. Al Marcus and colleagues conducted the largest study to date evaluating a telephone counseling program for early stage, post-treatment, breast cancer patients. The program reported a 50% reduction in levels of distress and depression. The study has national implications for telephone counseling, particularly in areas where patients have limited geographic and transportation access.
The Prevention and Control Department continues to be the local and national model for cancer prevention and control with its long-term focus on behavioral and psychosocial research and dissemination of educational resources and counseling to patients, families and communities.
