TREATMENT

Eliminating suffering from cancer by innovative prevention strategies, by developing early detection methods and by individualized therapies to increase the cure rate and to make cancer a chronic illness in those who can be cured.

• Dr. Tim Byers and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment have launched and promoted a unique community-based program to promote colorectal cancer screenings with funds from tobacco taxes. The program includes medical staff orientation, no cost colonoscopies for eligible Coloradans and follow-up care.

• Dr. James Hill established the Colorado on the Move program to encourage moderate exercise to prevent obesity and health problems. The program has been expanded nationally and is the best known public health program of its type in the nation.

• Dr. Dennis Ahnen found that colonoscopy is the most effective screening test for colorectal cancer and his research has translated into getting the Colorado Department of Health and Environment to promote colonoscopies statewide.
